About fertilizing the grass

A lawn should be thick, uniform, lush and, above all, green. It should be resistant, and allow you to run on it, play baseball, badminton or soccer, or simply lie down and enjoy the green surroundings. The lawn must also be able to withstand fierce competition from weeds and moss, which have the advantage of having a longer growing season than grass.

A dense, lush, green lawn needs care and maintenance. It also needs a good mix of nutrients to have any chance of being as dense and attractive as you would like it to be.

When should I fertilize my lawn?

Spring is the most important time to fertilize your lawn. The first time, when it begins to show signs of life after winter. Fertilizing in the spring gives your lawn a much-needed dose of nutrients. Weeds and moss will have already started to grow, so the grass needs extra strength to create a dense lawn that overwhelms them.

How often should I fertilize my lawn?

It is better to fertilize little and with some frequency than a lot only from time to time. Ideally, you should fertilize your lawn two or three more times in late spring and summer. If you want to give your lawn a final tonic in the fall, you should use a fertilizer that contains phosphorus and potassium but without nitrogen. Fertilizing in the fall strengthens and hardens the grass before winter, but it is not as important for a healthy, lush lawn as fertilizing in the spring and summer.

How to fertilize

When fertilizing, be sure to spread the fertilizer evenly and sparsely over the entire lawn. Provide 2 to 3 kilos of fertilizer per 100 square meters of lawn. It’s a good idea to use a fertilizer spreader, especially if you have a large lawn. Spreading fertilizer by hand and evenly, in the right amount, can be difficult if you are not used to it.
